Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) rejuvenates the upper and lower eyelids by removing excess fat, skin and muscle. Patients who get aesthetic eyelid surgery seem younger and more bright. This common treatment can be performed on the upper and lower eyelids separately or together if necessary. Eyelid surgeries can be combined with other facial rejuvenation surgeries in needed patients.

Smokers should give up smoking at least two-three weeks before surgery, as is advised for all procedures. The patient should let his doctor know what medications he or she is taking. Before surgery, blood thinners may need to be changed or stopped.

An upper blepharoplasty procedure lasts around 30 minutes. In order to do upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made from the crease of the upper eyelid, and extra skin, muscle, and fat tissues are also removed during the procedure.

The lower blepharoplasty procedure lasts about an hour, and the incision is made 2 mm below the eyelashes. The fat under the eyes is redistributed or excised. The extra skin is removed if required.

After surgery, patients may be discharged the same day or may need to stay in the hospital for one day. Around the eyes, there might be bruising and swelling which is largely regressed within 7-10 days. Temporary dryness, burning, or itching of eyes may also occur but these side effects are rare.

After two weeks, patients can start using contact lenses again (upon re-evaluation by the physician).
